East Village

Studio & Treatment Room Rental for East Village Practitioners

From Third Avenue, it's a 10-minute walk. From Tompkins Square Park, it's closer to 20 — either way, the L and the 6 both cover the distance in one stop.

The walk

Depends where in the East Village you start.

The East Village runs from Third Avenue east to Avenue D, and "how far is Union Square" genuinely depends on which end you're standing on. From the western blocks near Third Avenue and St. Marks Place, it's about a 10-minute walk west on 14th Street or through University Place — flat, direct, no avenue crossing longer than the ones you'd cross to get to your own subway. From Tompkins Square Park at Avenue A and 9th Street, the honest number is closer to 18 or 20 minutes, since you're covering most of the neighborhood's width before you even reach Union Square's edge.

Practitioners with clients spread across the neighborhood should give each one the number that matches their actual starting corner, not a single average that undersells the walk from Tompkins Square or oversells it from Third Avenue.

Transit

The L and the 6 both do it in one stop.

The L train's First Avenue and Third Avenue stations sit inside the East Village, and both reach 14th Street–Union Square without a transfer — First Avenue is two stops, Third Avenue one. The 6 train's Astor Place station, on the neighborhood's western edge near Broadway and Lafayette, is one stop north of 14th Street–Union Square. For a client near Tompkins Square, walking to Astor Place or the L's First Avenue stop is usually faster than walking the whole distance to the studio.

Who this suits

Younger, flexible-schedule clients who already ride the L.

The East Village skews younger and more transient than Gramercy or Greenwich Village — NYU and Cooper Union students, service-industry workers with daytime free hours, and a dense population of renters who move around the neighborhood often but stay loyal to a practitioner once they find one. That favors massage therapists and stretch or mobility specialists who can offer off-peak daytime and late-evening hours, and personal trainers whose East Village clients already default to the L for everything else in their week. It's a client base that responds to a straightforward one-stop train pitch more than to "walkable" — most of them are already comfortable on the L.

Parking & biking

Citi Bike covers the Tompkins Square gap.

Street parking in the East Village is dense residential permit territory, so driving in rarely makes sense for a single session. Citi Bike docks are scattered through the neighborhood, including near Tompkins Square Park, and for anyone starting from the neighborhood's eastern blocks, a bike closes that 20-minute walk down to something closer to eight or nine minutes.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the walk from Tompkins Square Park?

About 18 to 20 minutes at a normal pace, heading west on East 14th Street or through St. Marks Place to Broadway and then to Union Square West. It's flat and safe the whole way, but it's a real walk, not a quick hop — the East Village's eastern blocks near Avenue A and B are almost a mile from the studio.

Is there a faster way from the western East Village?

Yes. Closer to Third Avenue and 14th Street, the walk drops to around 10 minutes, and the L train's Third Avenue station is one stop from 14th Street–Union Square. The 6 train at Astor Place is also one stop north of Union Square.

Which subway should East Village clients use?

The L train, boarding at First Avenue or Third Avenue, reaches 14th Street–Union Square directly. The 6 train at Astor Place is a one-stop ride south. Both avoid transfers.
